Well, I am just home from a wonderful weekends racing at Mondello’s season opener. We had a bit of everything- quick newbies, seasoned campaigners taking wins, monster shunts and even a post race boxing match that didn’t include any Punto Abarth drivers!
Formula Sheane, having just linked up with the Make A Wish Foundation, had a good grid of well turned out cars but nobody had an answer to the pace of Brian Hearty. Hearty has lost count of the amount of Mondello races he has won but suffice it to say, it is well into three figures. (I wonder has he won more races than anyone else at the Kildare venue?). The Dundalk haulier managed to qualify under the lap record, and was almost a second ahead of his nearest challenger, Anton Savage missed qualifying, started from the pitlane and charged to an impressive fourth, showing pace that could have troubled Hearty had he started from the front. Tristan Quinn also showed well, before pitting with a
loose exhaust after some contact at the first corner, whilst Vee graduate Robbie Allen was a delighted second in his Vertical Racing run machine. Kevin Sheane, driving a borrowed car, having badly damaged his car in a huge testing shunt, completed the podium in third. Mondello’s “Become a Race Driver” competition winner Timmy Swail was mightily impressive on his maiden outing, only losing out to Savage for fourth after a great scrap in the closing stages- definitely one to watch. Barry Rabbitt tested one of the Wicklow built machines the day before the race and was on the pace in just one session so watch out for him if he decides to join the series at round two. ITCC driver Stephen Maher also made his single seater debut and ran right in the middle of the pack before a hairy spin at turn two dropped him back. Dan Polley also started from the back and as he got to grips with the machine, he managed a laptime which would have had him in the top three with ease. Watch this space…
“Sub Minute Vees” was actually trending on Twitter over the weekend as the air cooled single seaters went quicker than ever before on their new 2012 Dunlop tyres. Ray Moore and Lee Newsome resumed their 2011 battle in qualifying, swapping times before Moore finally took pole with the fastest ever Irish Vee lap time of 59.8! Newsome also joined the
exclusive sub minute club in second, with many of the other recording personal bests in the perfect conditions. A quick chat with team boss Bernard Dolan was interesting as he reckoned the cold air was helping the Vees as much as the new tyres, perhaps explaining the incredible times. I know I am no spring chicken, but when I raced Vees (with the same tech regs) you were an absolute hero if you dipped into the 61 second bracket! In the race, Moore led away and the first few laps were intriguing. Moore and Newsome seemed to have the pace to pull away, but few have better racecraft than Moore and he appeared to back Newsome up to the chasing pack a number of times. Each time he made a break though, Newsome seemed capable of closing the gap at will. Towards the end of the race, Adam McAulay’s oil cooler came loose and the track became extremely slippy. Moore was the first to discover the oil and when he got out of shape, Newsome pounced and snatched the lead. Ian Campbell, who had fought his way up to third immediately attacked Moore. As the black Leastone defended into Dunlop, Campbell took a dive down the outside, he then tried a classic Mondello move, switching back to the inside on the exit. Moore saw it coming though and with an equally old Mondello move, was in no hurry getting on the power. Campbell seemed committed however, and the Sheane rode over the back of the Leastone and off into the gravel. Moore survived but received a rear puncture in the incident. Newsome meanwhile was untroubled on the way to the win, from Dave Kelly and Rob Casey with Moore hobbling home in fourth. all the signs of a classic season in Formula Vee…..
Alistair Kellett took a great Abarth win in race one despite the best efforts of team mate Barry-John McHenry who kept him honest all the way. Gordon Kellett was right there too. Gary Miller took advantage of a reverse grid to win race two as a strangely off form John Denning held the rest back. Alistair Kellett finally found a way past and slashed the gap to Miller in the closing stages but ran out of laps. Unsurprisingly, no Punto 1400s turned up for what should be the first round of their championship- and just a single Uno for newcomer Niall Hammond. There seem to be 4 or 5 Unos coming out to race this year so perhaps they need to pick three or four dates to ensure they come out at the same time. It is now almost 20 years since the first Uno race at Mondello, they must be almost eligible for Historics now!
Speaking of historics, they produced a packed grid and some superb racing. John Cardoo qualified his slick shod Mini on pole and led away despite the best efforts of fellow front row sitter Bernard Foley in the MGBGT V8. Billy Crosbie’s Lotus Seven soon joined the lead battle and relieved Cardoo of the lead on the straight mid-race. Most of the interest centred
on Jackie Cochrane’s charge through the grid, having started from the pitlane. By the time Jackie had picked his way through the traffic, there were only a few laps to run. Cardoo was easily despatched on the main straight but Crosbie put up a tough fight, only conceding on the final lap and crossing the line just a second adrift of the mighty Tiger with Cardoo shadowing the pair. Bernard Foley was a distant fourth but must have made some adjustments between races as he blasted into the lead early on. As in race one, the Tiger charged up through the grid and even Foley’s 3.9 V8 MG was enough to match the mighty machine as Cochrane blasted through for the double. Cardoo completed the podium in third. With Alan Kessie having fun midfield in a standard Mini Cooper S and the Gryphon remaining in the workshop, it seems nobody can touch the Tiger at the moment. Wonder how much a set of slicks would cost for the Imp?!
The ITCC organisers made some brave decisions over the winter break, changing some regs and signing a tyre deal with Yokohama and Murray Motorsport. These moves were rewarded with packed grids and even more newcomers in their masses. With Messrs Treacy, Rabbitt, Whelan absent, and Philip Burdock and Ciaran Timmons not appearing, it was time for some new names to head the pack. Brian Fitzpatrick surprised everyone by qualifying his new Civic on pole with a great turn of speed ahead of ex karter Rob Butler in the ex Rabbitt/Timmons Integra. Hondas seem to be the way to go in ITCC lately but Paul O’Brien (Scirocco) and Phil Brennan (M3) have other ideas! Both were competitive over the weekend too. In race one, Gareth Hayden drove superbly to take the win, just ahead of fellow Integra pilot Rob Savage with Brian Sexton’s JOMO Nissan third. Sexton may have challenged the leaders but was held up when Butler got way out of shape at turn three early on and fought back from the bottom end of the top
ten. Fitzpatrick came home fourth after a couple of spins- one on the warm up lap! Keith Rabbitt’s beautifully turned out flame spitting Civic led the Touring class early on, under huge pressure from birthday boy Cian Carey and impressive newcomer Kevin Moran. Moran got the lead when Rabbitt dropped back but Carey, although vastly improved since 2011, is a little too fond of using the front bumper as a tool for overtaking. A gently tip into the second bit of the Esses was enough to unsettle the rear end of Moran’s newly built Civic Coupe and send him off into the tyres. Carey was first across the line then, from Anthony Murtagh and the recovering Rabbitt. In race two, Fitzpatrick nailed a perfect start from the second row to lead down into Ford Corner. Phil Brennan had obviously been fiddling with the BMW between races though and he tracked down the Civic. Before he got a chance to attack, Fitzpatrick locked up and slid into the gravel at Mazda. At the same time Anthony Murtagh’s Corrado had a huge off just after the start line, ending up heavily damaged under the bridge, blocking the the track and bringing out the red flags. Luckily Murtagh was able to get out and walk away unscathed, the Corrado didn’t look quite so healthy. At the restart Fitzpatrick led the shortened race away again but Brennan usurped him with a superb move round the outside of turn one to grab the lead. From there on, he was unchallenged and took the win ahead of Hayden and Savage whilst Eoghan Fogarty drove well to dominate Touring ahead of Rallycross regular David Bailey and Carey.
Alan Watkins led the Strykers away but went off mid race, apparently a consequence of a broken wishbone. This left Paul Yeomans clear to take the win from Stephen Ross with a delighted Brian Kingston taking his first podium in third. In race two, Watkins demonstrated his standing start skills to lead away again but Yeomans hauled him in and got by for the double. Roger Welaratne was third home in this one.
Sean Doyle was in top form in Ginetta Junior Ireland at the end of 2011 and he took the unusual step of going to Global
Lights for his next career step. It made sense for many reasons. ABR, who ran his Ginetta, run the entire Global class too, the cars are quick, lapping Mondello National in well under a minute, and they are relatively cheap to run. The only issue was that there are some quick guys at the front and they had the potential to inadvertantly damage Sean’s career if he could not beat them. Judging by Sundays performances, it was a good decision. Sean was the pace of the class for most of the weekend. He led race one before spinning at turn three, then provided all the entertainment as he charged back up to second behind team boss Alan Byrne. His placement of the car, particularly into the Esses, was wonderful to watch, making his exit so much quicker than his next target, that you would think he had an extra 10bhp as he got alongside as they approached the braking zone for Dunlop. In race two, he took a controlled victory with Byrne in attendance thoughout, the pair well ahead of the rest. It looks as if he may have raised the bar in the class and it will be interesting to see how former champions Max Drennan, Bernie Braden and the returning Keith Dawson will react to this as the season progresses.
James Fleming came out tops in a great scrap with Jake Byrne in Ginetta Junior Ireland race one, the pair swapping places on numerous occasions in a hard but fair race. Young Jack Finlay marked himself out as one to watch this year too taking
third place. In race two, Byrne and Fleming resumed their battle, this time with the vastly improved Andrew Clarke in attendance. Clarke seems to have shed his wild man image over the winter as he calmly shadowed the leaders and he was ideally placed when Byrne’s last lap attempt to wrest the lead away from Fleming went wrong. By the time Byrne had gathered it all up, Clarke was though for his best result ever.
Eamonn Matheson’s Ninja T5 has always been ridiculously fast in a straight line. A bit like the Titanic though, it wasn’t too handy at changes of direction (both were built in Northern Ireland too now that I think of it…) After a major shunt last year, the car has been completely rebuilt and unfortunately for the other Formula Libre Ireland competitors, it now seems a lot handier through the twiddly bits. In race one, The Apprentice winner and subsequent TV personality Eugene Heary, led away in his beautifully presented Rothmans liveried Reynard. Matheson closed in though and blasted by on the main straight. Heary was spectacular in his efforts to fight holding onto a massive moment out of Dunlop in the closing stages and crossing the line almost alongside. He later explained that his tyres were well past their best and it was a bit of a handful to drive! In race two, Peter Dwyer rocketed away in his F3 Dallara and Matheson has no answer for him, finishing well behind with Heary having dropped out at the start. Paul Heavey’s Leastone provided all the entertainment in this one as he used circuit knowledge and a nimble chassis to hold off first the Formula Masters car of Philip Shields, then the Formula Renault of Fergus Faherty. Faherty was not as appreciative as the grandstand crowd unfortunately and there were ugly scenes in the paddock afterwards, Faherty rightly being on the receiving end of disciplinary action by the race officials.
This apart, it was a wonderful days racing at Mondello and it would seem we are in for a great 2012 season.
Formula Sheane and I are organising a sponsored walk around Mondello on June 9th at 6pm. It is to raise funds for the excellent Make-A-Wish Foundation and all are welcome on the day. Sponsorship cards are available from me so pick one up and join us on the day for a bit of fun! One lap of Mondello National is about 2k and I am assured the bar will be open so maybe we can organise some fun and games for afterwards too.
